Taking a Quick Look at the Hot Tools Professional 1181 Curling Iron

Hot Tools Professional 1181 Curling Iron ReviewHere are some of the pros and cons of this curling iron that works well at reshaping often kinky and coarse black hair:

Pros:

  • Non-tapered 1-inch barrel
  • Rheostat dial heat (280°F – 430°F)
  • 24k gold plated barrel
  • Pulse Technology® eliminates heat fluctuation
  • Powerful spring clamp
  • Favorite heat setting memory

Cons:

  • Non-tapered 1-inch barrel is limited in the types of curls it can make
  • No dual voltage capability
  • Performance and Versatility

The Hot Tools Professional 1181 Curling Iron is absolutely loaded with features. You get such nice features with it as the rheostat heat selection dial (280°F – 430°F), the powerful spring clamp (just what you need to hold black hair) and its 24k gold plated 1-inch diameter barrel.

It also features consistent heating Pulse Technology® that helps this curling iron to be ready to use in 30 seconds or less and it keeps it at the set temperature the whole time you are using it. The Hot Tools Professional 1181 Curling Iron will also learn and memorize your favorite heat setting and come on and go to that temperature each time you turn it on.

Safety and Convenience

Hot Tools did a mediocre job with this curling iron as far as safety is concerned. They did build an auto shut-off into but it does not kick in until after 2-hours have gone by. The package includes a stand to rest the curling iron on during use but surprisingly does not include a protective styling glove which you will certainly need.

You get plenty of freedom of movement when you use this curling iron due to its 8-foot power cord with attached non-knotting swivel end.

Why Does This Curling Iron Work So Well On Black Hair?

The Hot Tools Professional 1181 Curling Iron works so well on black hair for one reason and that is because of the way it heats. High heat is what works best on kinky, thick and coarse hair and this curling iron heats up to as high as 430°F. It also makes consistent high heat thanks to its built-in Pulse Technology® which eliminates heat fluctuation. When you add to that the fact its 24k gold barrel distributes that ultra-high heat evenly you have the perfect curling iron to tame sometimes stubborn Afro-American hair.

Warranty Support and Potential Concerns with the Hot Tools Professional 1181 Curling Iron

The warranty that comes with this curling iron is nothing special at all. Hot Tools simply warranties it for only one full year.

This curling tool works well on black type hair but it’s not perfect either. For one, the non-tapered barrel restricts the size and tightness of the curls you can make with it.

Also, with its lightweight design and small size, you would think that this curling iron would make a good one to take with you as you travel but there is a catch. If you are traveling to a country overseas the Hot Tools Professional 1181 Curling Iron has no dual voltage capability.

Some Final Thoughts on the Hot Tools Professional 1181 Curling Iron

This curling iron definitely has the high heat and versatility you need to reshape and curl sometimes stubborn black hair. It is comfortable and easy to use and has some real nice bonus features like its 24k gold barrel surface and its innovative dial-up heat control. The curl size you can make with it is slightly limited because of its 1-inch non-tapered barrel size but if you are interested in looser, medium size curls it will nicely do the trick for your black type hair.
